He was born and raised in the projects to a teenage mother, and an absent father in downtown Newport News, Virginia—​locally known as The Bottom or Badnewz.

During the late 1980s to early 1990s, the area was recognized as one of the deadliest cities in the country. From the ​outset, it seemed the odds were stacked against him. He grew up surrounded by gun violence, murder, drugs, armed ​robbery, and prostitution, among other severe challenges. Recognizing the need for a change,

Darrick sought a way out through enlistment in the United States Army.

In the Army, he acquired essential skills in stress management, resilience, and critical thinking, and gained a wealth of ​knowledge that shaped his leadership capabilities. These skills allowed him to effectively mentor soldiers from diverse ​backgrounds. Over a commendable and rewarding 25-year career, Darrick led thousands of troops, receiving numerous ​accolades for his service.

Now retired, he continues to dedicate his efforts to guiding teens and young adults.

He applies the same processes and strategies that served him in training soldiers.

Darrick is aiming to empower the next generation to overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.
